The Sound of Music

     Music By Richard Rodgers
      Lyrics By Oscar Hammerstein II

Book by Richard Lindsay, Russel Crouse
         The Rose Theater, Omaha

A production that bridged past and present, we opened with the image of a boy in traditional Austrian shepherd dress, lost on the mountain. Maria sings. By using an intersectional casting process, the Von Trapp family was comprised of children with identities the Nazis sought to extinguish- Jewishness, Trans/Queer, BIPOC, Disability. As the Captain is finally forced to contemplate his choice to accept or reject the Nazi commission, his children play upstage of him as an Elie Wiesel interview plays. At the end of the show, we witness the Von Trapps escape just in time to realize the nuns have stopped singing as one soldier remains- the boy we saw at the top of show lost on the mountain.
