The Incredible Flying Machine

When Sai invents a flying machine made completely of found objects, she dreams of escaping her own walled-in world and seeks out a partner capable of bringing her creation to those in need all around the world.  Judy, an American housewife, meets Sai on the internet, wanting an escape from a monotonous marriage and in dire need of friendship.  When Judy  agrees to help this Middle Eastern dreamer, her choice which leaves both of their worlds upended and need to be rebuilt.  Sai’s mother, Udia, is a stroke survivor who, upon Judy’s arrival, begins to have reveries to the moments leading up to this endless war.  The power of these memories eventually sets the three women on a journey that will change their lives forever.  Read an excerpt here.  Read the full text here.
 
The Red Balloon

Mara suffers from memory loss.  She knows her daughter Lilly is close to putting Mara in an assisted care facility, one with terrifying applesauce.  When Mara’s dead husband Sid pays a visit, she sets out on the journey of a lifetime to find him.  Along the way, she encounters a homeless prophet, a loving old man, and one of her husband’s many jealous admirers.  As Lilly searches for her mother with the aid of her hapless husband, both women discover the questions love asks:

Is it possible to forget a person entirely, or was the indelible imprint of shared experiences truly eternal?  Can love survive the bonds of this world, bonds intrinsically tied to the degradation of our bodies?  Is a memory ever dead?
