Disney's Beauty And The Beast: The Broadway Musical
Music By Alan Menken
Lyrics By Howard Ashman and Tim Rice
Book By Linda Woolverton
The Rose Theater, Omaha
Our production explored the consequences of dehumanizing other people. We embodied the "curse" the castle is under by sucking the saturate color out of the design and putting the castle residents in mask. The color only returns when characters recognize the dimensional humanity of one another. To further emphasize this and to draw audiences into the world, we gave them mugs and napkins to dance along with the actors. "Be Our Guest" is the first moment when the castle characters see Belle as more than a catalyst for removing the curse, so this is a moment we wanted the audience to fully embrace, recognizing they too are in the presence of incredible and complex human beings.
