The Meaning of Maggie
Adapted by By Tory Stewart
Based on the books by Megan Jean Sovern
The Rose Theater, Omaha
World Premiere
Having several members of my extended family carrying Multiple Sclerosis diagnoses, I wanted to commission a play that focused on the impact such a long-term medical illness has on a family unit. Ms. Sovern's book was autobiographical and deeply funny. The central conflict swirls around this family in the 1980s not sharing transparently about Dad's diagnosis with their youngest daughter, Maggie. Maggie shares a special connection with Dad, rooted in appreciation for Neil Young and being a "brainiac".
The design centered the work of an incredible artist, Elizabeth Jameson, who makes empowering re-colorizations of brain scans. Having M.S. herself, Ms. Jameson was generous in allowing us to utilize her work in creating a vibrant portrait of not just the physical body, but of the landscapes of the imagination as well.
